Random Sequence

What's Happening at Random Sequence?

It’s been awfully quiet on the journal front for a while! Here’s what’s been going on in the past 18 months:

Leaving Line

I had a good run working with Line for nine months, starting with an update to The Drum as a freelance contractor, then six months (almost) full time until September 2008. During that time I worked on a complete re-vamp of Welcome to Scotland, and on an industry accreditation app for The Golf Environment Organization.

All were great opportunities to work on web applications of greater complexity than I’ve looked at before. Working with a team of experienced designers brings out a richness of design which I’m proud to have been part of.

Leaving Edinburgh

In May 2008, shortly after getting married, my wife & I gave up the nightlife of central Edinburgh for the calm & kitchen gardening opportunities of rural Perthshire. Initially as an experiment, which has proved a success. I’m still back in Edinburgh most weeks to meet with clients and occasionally to catch up with all at the Edinburgh Coffee Morning.

Outside Line

To the confusion of everybody, I left Line to work with Outside Line, a London based agency with an impressive client list. I joined Outside Line as their iPhone App developer. There I worked on branded apps for Grazia, Cravendale Milk (App store link), We Will Rock You (App store link) and Queen’s Absolute Greatest Hits (App store link).

I left Outside Line in September 2009, but continue to work on new iPhone apps for their clients.

Designer Lights

During my tenure at both Line and Outside Line, I continued to work part time on designer-lights.com, a website selling designer lights from high-profile designers.

In the past 18 months, designer-lights.com has been gently massaged into a very successful business - now one of the largest retailers of its kind in Europe. We’re currently working on fully automating the stock system, and a redesign of the public site.

Completed Websites

You may have noticed from the Websites section a couple of other new sites. An blog & online shop for Firth Cycles (“A great little bike shop on a great big hill.”) and a portfolio site for Edinburgh architects 7N.

New Projects

I’m currently working with Tim Bremner of Bremner Design on new websites for Strange Cargo (a company specialising in public arts projects), on a new website for Edinburgh based Lighting Design Partnership International, on a new website & online shop for Dirt School Mountain Bike Coaching. All are nearing the end of their development. You should hear more about those soon.

Mac Apps

Our Mac desktop app Sticky Notes was featured as part of the 2009 MacHeist promotion. More recently, after a very long beta period, we’re proud to announce the release of Sticky Notes 1.5.0 final.

iPhone Apps

Most excitingly, I’m about ready to launch my first independent, commercial iPhone application. I’m going to need all of the help I can get making this a success. I will be telling everyone about this shortly!

Twitter

I’ve had a list of my recent twitter posts on the left there for some time (“Right Now”), but in case you missed it, you can keep up with my micro-activies by following me on Twitter (I’m not that chatty though!).
